Silo Construction

Styldrift Merensky Project

Total Concrete Cast: 4575m³

Project Timeline: September 2014 – February 2015

Project Overview

The Styldrift Merensky project involved the construction of a large-scale silo and its foundation, requiring advanced engineering techniques and precise execution. The work focused on the silo’s structural foundation, including large cast-in sections and continuous concrete pours, all performed with tight tolerances to ensure the integrity of the structure.

Key Features:

  • Foundation and Silo Base: The foundation consisted of large cast-in sections that required minimal tolerance to ensure structural stability. A key challenge was the large continuous pour, which took over 24 hours to complete. The silo base itself had a diameter of 22 meters and a thickness of 2 meters.
  • Structural Columns: The project also involved the construction of 12 structural columns, each 14 meters high, within the silo. These columns were integral to the silo’s overall stability and required careful planning and execution.
  • Feeder Slab and Formwork: A 2-meter-thick feeder slab was constructed to provide essential support, incorporating soffit formwork that ensured the proper shape and structural integrity of the silo’s underside.

The Styldrift Merensky project showcased our expertise in delivering large-scale, precision-driven concrete works within challenging timelines. Every aspect, from continuous large pours to complex formwork, required skilled coordination and execution to meet the project’s demanding standards.
