The Concentrate Handling & Storage Project was initiated because the Concentrate Storage Shed at the Waterval Smelter had for years been a problem due to its limited size and the lack of space for expansion. The project was awarded late December 2021 and construction commenced in March 2022. The expected completion of the project is December 2022.
The project involves the construction of a 112m x 90m concrete Slab, 300mm thick, with cast-in rails levelled to top of concrete. We expect to cast about 3000m3 of 35Mpa concrete, with 6000m of 22kg rails and 130 tons of reinforcing.
Also included is the construction of a silt trap 50m x 16m x 3m deep, 1 km of Clearvu fencing and upgrading roads to the site. The storage facility site lies just north of Waterval Smelter, in Rustenburg.
