Zondereinde Cooling Towers

G4 Mining and Civils (Pty) Ltd was entrusted with the construction of two pre-cooling towers and one three-cell condenser cooling tower at Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde Mine. This project involves the placement of a substantial volume of concrete, alongside the use of innovative formwork techniques, working at height, and the integration of complex structural elements.

The scope and scale of the project presented an opportunity for our team to demonstrate our expertise in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects safely and efficiently, even in challenging environments.

• Cooling Tower Construction: The project encompassed the construction of two pre-cooling towers and one large three-cell condenser cooling tower. These structures will play a vital role in maintaining operational efficiency at the mine.
• Concrete and Reinforcement: A total of 1,300 m³ of concrete was cast across the towers, reinforced with 41 tonnes of rebar to ensure structural integrity. The sheer volume of material and the precision required were key challenges, and we overcame them through careful planning and coordination.
• Formwork and Structural Steel: The project involved the installation of 1,100 m² of formwork, creating the necessary shapes and support for the cooling towers. Additionally, 81 tonnes of structural steel were used to reinforce the towers, contributing to their overall stability and performance.
• Work at Heights: The construction required extensive work at height, ensuring the safe and effective assembly of the cooling tower structures. Our team adhered to strict safety protocols to ensure that all work was completed safely.
