Two Rivers Platinum (TRP) Merensky Project: Civils and Earthworks for Crusher Facility

Location: Steelpoort, South Africa
Client: Two Rivers Platinum
Start Date: June 2022
Completion Date: May 2024

We were contracted to carry out extensive civils and earthworks at the TRP Merensky Project in Steelpoort. This ambitious undertaking focused on constructing critical mining infrastructure, including the bulk earthworks, reinforced concrete structures, and the development of a pollution control dam to support sustainable mining operations.

Scope of Work

The project encompassed various key elements to enhance the mining facility’s operational capabilities:

  • Bulk Earthworks: Significant earthmoving activities to prepare the site for subsequent construction phases.
  • Reinforced Concrete Structures: Building durable structures, including a Macafferri wall and foundational elements for the Crusher (primary and secondary), MCC, Transformer Bay, and other support structures
  • Macafferri Wall Construction: Ensuring slope stability and protection around the tipping facility.
  • Water Infrastructure: Construction of a 10 Megalitre Dam and a Pollution Control Dam to manage water resources and control contamination.
  • Tailings and Plant Sleepers: Laying the groundwork for efficient plant operations and waste management.

Challenges and Solutions

The project faced several challenges, most notably issues with the initial quality of concrete supplied. To overcome this, a new supplier was sourced, and stringent quality assurance measures were implemented. This included sending all site supervisors on a specialized Concrete Technology Course to ensure that the concrete quality met industry standards. Each batch of concrete was meticulously inspected and approved by a QA representative before leaving the batch plant, ensuring consistency and reliability.

Timeline and Delivery

Despite facing delays with the Macafferri Wall and water dams, the project team showed resilience and adaptability, completing other key structures, such as the Crusher, MCC and Transformer Bay, on time. The overall project adhered closely to the original timeline, demonstrating G4 Mining and Civils’ commitment to excellence and client satisfaction.

Team Effort

A total of 267 personnel, including 153 permanent staff and 114 contractors, were involved in the project. Exceptional leadership and quality control were provided by Mr. Howard Moyo and Mr. Abisha Rokumbo, Civil Supervisors, whose attention to detail and dedication were crucial in delivering high-quality structures on schedule.

Project Statistics

  • Concrete Cast: 3,605 m³
  • Reinforcement: 222 tons
  • Earthworks: 153,000 m³
  • Man-hours: 457,455 hours

The TRP Merensky Project exemplifies G4 Mining and Civils’ capability to manage complex projects and deliver top-notch infrastructure, enhancing operational efficiency and safety for the client. This project not only met its objectives but also set a benchmark for quality and performance in mining infrastructure development.
